I was a basketball coach and Gym Director at Legarza’s summer basketball camp. They first employed me when I was sixteen and I immediately became a coach. It taught me to collaborate with people older than me and more knowledgeable than me. I was able to find my footing and my position gave me confidence to stay motivated. Organization, Communication, Patience: three skills I learned from this job that helped me succeed and get promoted to Gym Director. As a Gym Director I was in charge of planning the day-to-day routine for the camp and the overall weekly plan. I had to effectively communicate and execute the plans. There were around 100-200 kids per week at camp and as Gym Director I ran a team of 7-12 coaches per week.

I reached out to the Camp Manager at Kenny Smith’s Basketball Camp and arranged for myself to be their first ever intern. I organized my own flight but they paid for housing and more. My duties included a lot of organization and following directions, whether it be waking the campers up and escorting them to cafeterias on time or collecting campers for scrimmages. It was a big learning experience for me as I got to confidently as questions to coaches from across the country. I brought a notebook with me everywhere and I still have it on my bookshelf today.

I started working at Stanford Basketball Camp when I was in high school. For two summers and two overnight winter camps, I was a coach to a team of 8-11 high school basketball players. It was one of the more competitive camps I’ve worked at as there were a couple college recruits coming in each week. As a coach I was given the responsibility of devising my own drills, plays, gameplans and player rotations. I had complete creative freedom in my decision making and it made me better at collaborating with others. I learned to understand opposition better and adapt, changing my strategy for a better outcome. I learned how to manage different personalities with a team full of high school teenagers.

Sacred Heart Preparatory, 2016-2019

My sophomore year in high school I became the Team Manager for the varsity men’s basketball team. I edited together game-film clips for the Head Coach based on his points of emphasis. I took game-film of opposing teams and scouted their strengths and weaknesses and presented them to the Head Coach. I was in charge of taking stats during games and was involved in some half-time discussions. My senior year, I was given the unofficial title of Assistant Coach—I didn’t have the qualifications—which meant that I was included in pre-game strategy talks, practice planning, in-game directions to subbed players and I maintained my original responsibilities of Team Manager. Over the summers I was the school’s AAU coach for their sponsored seventh and eighth grade team. This meant that I had complete creative freedom in training my players and organizing their practice schedules for the season.
